There are approximately 3 million people throughout the United States who are currently living with glaucoma. Because the most common form of this disease does not have warning signs and it develops most frequently in people over the age of 60, who tend to expect some reduction in vision, it is often overlooked. In fact, experts estimate that around half of those who are living with the disease do not even know that they have it.
As this disease is a leading cause of blindness responsible for between 9 and 12 percent of all cases of blindness throughout the United States, it is extremely important for your parent to get early detection of the disease so that they can get on the treatment that is right for them. Frequent eye exams is a vital part of this, but you should also be aware of the potential signs and symptoms of the disease so that you can detect if your parent might be experiencing this disease, or increased effects of it. This will allow you to talk to their eye doctor about it, and ensure that they are getting the care and treatment that they need.
Some of the signs and symptoms of acute-angle closure glaucoma can include:
- Severe headache
- Blurred vision
- Halo effect in vision, particularly around lights
- Eye pain
- Nausea and vomiting
- Redness in the eyes
Some of the signs and symptoms of open-angle closure glaucoma can include:
- Tunnel vision once the disease reaches an advanced stage
- Blind spots in the center of the vision or in the peripheral vision
