As a caregiver, you’ve probably already found that you need to be prepared for just about anything. This is definitely the case if your elder adult is incontinent. Having a go bag with you that has all that you might need in the event of an accident can have you both feeling prepared and confident.
Extra Clothes and Something to Contain Soiled Clothes
Even with the best incontinence products on the market, your elder could have an accident that creates a leak. This isn’t anything to be embarrassed about, but your senior definitely doesn’t want to spend the rest of the outing in soiled clothing. Bring a full change of clothes so that she’s got something clean to change into. It’s also a good idea to bring a plastic bag or other container to put the soiled clothing into to keep it separate from everything else.
Wipes, Cleaning Products, and Skin Care Products
Whatever your elder needs at home for an accident she’ll also need when you go out and about. You might also need products you don’t usually need, like wipes or hand sanitizer, in case there’s not a sink near the stall you’re using. Keep a gallon-sized zippered plastic bag full of everything that you might need. Many of these products come in trial sizes, which make them even easier to carry along with you.
Extra Incontinence Products
You definitely don’t want to forget to pack extra incontinence products, too. Even if your senior doesn’t have an accident, if you’re out for more than an hour or so, your senior will need to change these items out for fresh ones. This helps her to feel less self-conscious and it helps to protect her skin in case she’s had a little bit of leakage.
A Sign for the Bathroom Door
One item that you might forget to pack could be a sign for the door. This is especially helpful if the bathroom that you’re visiting is one that has a single stall and you know you’re going to be a little while. The sign can keep people from knocking on the door and rushing you and your elder as you handle what you need to handle. It can say something as simple as “Helping Elderly Adult.”
Remember to keep a bag packed so that you don’t have to spend time packing every time you want to go out together. And when you get home, get that soiled clothing into the wash as soon as possible.
