WHO PAYS FOR LONG TERM CARE SERVICES?

We never expect to need long term care services. However, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, “someone turning 65 has almost a 70% chance of needing some type of long term care services”. In addition, the cost of long term care is extremely expensive. According to the NYS Department of Finance, “nursing home costs are approximately $142,350 per year in the Long Island area”. So who will pay for this service?

Most people assume Medicare will cover the cost. Unfortunately, Medicare will only pay for skilled services up to 100 days in a nursing home and the average nursing home stay is 2 ½ years. In addition, most private insurance plans do not provide a long term care rider and most people over age 65 are currently not holding Long Term Care Insurance plans. For those assuming Medicaid will cover your bill, you must fall below a predetermined poverty level to have access to these funds. So, are you ready to pay? For most of us the answer is, “No” and “what should I do?”. Star Multi Care is here to help.
