Winter Weather Safety
We want our patients and their families to
stay safe this winter season, so here are a few tips for you to
review. Should you have any questions, feel free to contact our
office.
Indoor Safety
·
If
using a wood stove, fireplace, or space heater have a multipurpose,
dry chemical
fire extinguisher nearby.
·
Do not burn paper
in the fireplace.
·
Have your chimney
or flue inspected annually
·
Do not place space
heater near things that may catch on fire, including drapes,
furniture and bedding.
·
Conserve heat by
closing off unused rooms and avoid opening windows and
door unnecessarily.
·
Keep a water supply
in case of frozen water pipes.
·
Eat well-balanced
meals to help you stay warmer
·
Keep several days’ supply of food, water, and medicines on hand.
·
Monitor the indoor
temperature frequently for infants and the elderly as infants lose
body heat more easily than adults and the ability to feel a change
in
temperature decreases with age.
Outdoor
Safety
·
When
shoveling snow, take frequent breaks, push the snow instead of
lifting it,
and use a long-handled shovel.
·
Wear shoes
with rubber soles to prevent falls.
·
Dress warmly
and stay dry by wearing wind resistant outer clothes, a hat,
mittens, and several layers of loose-fitting clothing.
·
Avoid
exertion.
·
Avoid ice
and keep steps and walkways free of ice by using rock salt or sand.
·
When
traveling in the car listen to the radio for any weather advisories;
keep emergency supplies in your car, including blankets; and always
let
someone know your destination and arrival time.
·
Prepare your
car for winter.
·
Emergency
supplies should include: cell phone and charger, blankets,
first aid kit, tool kit, windshield scraper, flashlight and extra
batteries,
high calorie fried foods, collapsible shovel, bag of sand or kitty
litter for traction in
the snow.
